Public hearing scheduled for Tuesday, August 19 in Albemarle
The NC Department of Environmental Quality’s Division of Water Resources has issued a draft National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit for Badin Business Park. The permit regulates what Badin Business Park can discharge into Badin Lake and an unnamed tributary to Little Mountain Creek.
The draft permit is available for public review and comment. You can view the draft permit here.
A public hearing will take place on Tuesday, August 19 at 6:00 pm at the Stanly County Commons (Gene McIntyre Meeting Room), located at 1000 N. First Street in Ablemarle, NC. Individuals wishing to speak at the hearing may sign up onsite beginning at 5:30 pm.
Public comments may also be submitted by email (publiccomments@deq.nc.gov) until 5:00 pm on Wednesday, August 20. Include “Badin Business Park Permit” in the email subject line.
Badin Business Park is the former home of the Alcoa Badin Works smelter. The facility has not operated since 2010. The Division of Water Resources continues to regulate the discharge of groundwater and stormwater from the site.
The draft permit requires Badin Business Park to continue monitoring for pollutants at certain discharge points, to have results tested at a certified laboratory, and to report findings to the state. Additional monitoring requirements have been added to the draft permit, including monitoring for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs), and metals at several outfalls that discharge to a tributary of Little Mountain Creek and to Badin Lake (Outfalls 005, 012 and 013).
