Alcoa Power Generating, Inc. (APGI) is selling nearly 5,000 acres of undeveloped land in central North Carolina. The 17 parcels include 11 tracts in Rowan County, totaling more than 3,500 acres; three parcels in Davidson County (449 acres); and three parcels in Stanly County (947 acres). Many of the properties are located along the shore of the Yadkin River near High Rock Lake and Tuckertown Reservoir.
These properties were purchased by APGI several decades ago when it operated four hydroelectric dams located along a 38-mile stretch of the Yadkin River. When Cube Hydro purchased the Yadkin Hydroelectric Project from APGI in 2016, the company was not interested in acquiring these lands.
As part of its commitment to environmental sustainability, APGI agreed to donate or sell more than 6,000 acres of undeveloped property near the lakes for permanent conservation. This included donations of more than 1,000 acres to expand Morrow Mountain State Park, 270 acres to expand the Uwharrie National Forest, 63 acres for Eagle Point Nature Preserve in Rowan County, and 14 acres around the Badin Public Recreation Area in Stanly County.
In recent years, APGI has sold 2,463 acres above High Rock Lake and 2,300 acres along Tuckertown Reservoir to the NC Wildlife Resources Commission, the Three Rivers Land Trust and other conservation partners. These properties included 45 miles of shoreline on the Yadkin River above High Rock Lake and 31 miles of shoreline along the eastern shore of the Tuckertown Reservoir.
