Several former smelter buildings at the Badin Business Park are being cleared to help attract prospective companies to the site. Here is an update on the status of the project:
The Schedule: Demolition work began on April 2, 2025 and is scheduled to be completed this fall. All work is being performed on weekdays between 7am and 5pm.
Waste Materials: There are extensive regulations governing the handling and disposal of waste in North Carolina. In keeping with those regulations, waste materials at Badin Business Park were collected and safely removed before demolition work took place. This includes asbestos-containing materials. Waste materials will be disposed in accordance with applicable regulations.
Permitting and Inspections: An asbestos permit/notification was issued by the NC Department of Health and Human Services, Divisions of Public Health on February 27, 2025. A third-party post asbestos abatement inspection was performed at the site on March 19, 2025. Pre-demolition surveys were conducted on April 1-2, 2025 in compliance with OSHA regulations. In addition, the contractor obtained a demolition permit from Stanly County.
Dust Suppression: To reduce dust, a water tank truck is on site to spray structures and the surrounding areas as demolition work is being performed. We are continuously monitoring demolition activities and will reduce or pause work should the dust become difficult to control with water.
Runoff: Demolition activities are routinely monitored and controls are, and have been, added as necessary to mitigate unfavorable discharges related to the demolition. Drainage from the demolition discharges at Outfalls 004 and 005, which are regulated under the site’s existing NPDES permit. Temporary exceedance of fluoride permit limits could occur, but efforts are being employed to minimize the extent and duration of potential exceedances.
